Last weekend, nineteen students from Unalaska City High School traveled to Anchorage to compete in the Russian, Spanish, and German Language competitions. Mrs. Galena Roraback, the school’s foreign language teacher, accompanied the students along with two other advisors. Mrs. Roraback has worked hard all year to teach and prepare the students, and is glad that students are able to finally show their knowledge of their respective languages.

Last Tuesday, expert spellers from the Elementary School and Junior High met in the high school gym to compete in the annual UCSD Spelling Bee.

The judges were Lauren Adams, Billie Jo Gehring, and Danielle Whittern. Mary Heimes was the pronouncer. Fifth grade teacher Josh Good organized the bee and read the spelling bee rules to the participants.

Last weekend, the Dimond Boys’ JV and the Lumen Christi Lady Archangels played the Unalaska Raiders here at home for homecoming week. The games started Friday night with the Raider boys’ game against Dimond. The game was back and forth from the beginning and in the end, the game came down to the final buzzer. With seconds left, sophomore guard Trevor Wilson hit a clutch three to send the game into overtime. The Raiders ultimately won in overtime with a score of 52-45.

The 9th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration took place on January 16th at the PCR gymnasium. The theme was “Caring Attitudes in Northern Latitudes." PCR coordinator Carlos Tayag was the master of ceremonies and the new PCR director, Roger Blakeley, gave a welcome address.

The Unalaska Raider Basketball teams played in their first games of the season last week. The teams traveled to Anchorage where they competed in the Rally the Regions tournament, which is a gathering of rural basketball teams from around the state. Rally the Regions is a four game tournament with the first three games being a “Round Robin” style and the last game being for the championship or other places.
