Thanks to the efforts of City of Unalaska Parks, Culture and Recreation help from the community, the 2018 Clean Up Week was a great success!
Beginning May 1st this year, Unalaskans responded to a call from the PCR to help pick up the trash that had accumulated on the beaches and roadways over the winter. Folks were asked to sign up for a specific area and attendants from the PCR handed out the signature yellow bags to all interested. The PCR kept track of the zones that had been tended to and promptly picked up the bags when the cleaning was done.
PCR Special Events Coordinator Nichel Kernin joined the City of Unalaska team this year and set forth a goal of a thousand bags at the end of the clean up weeks. As of May 18th, there were 1,103 bags collected and just over two tons of garbage and debris total.
Kernin said she is very happy with the results. “I am extremely impressed with the participation from companies and individuals throughout the community who put in the time and effort to make this event happen and so smoothly!” Kernin said. “Thank you to everyone who participated and I look forward to reaching higher goals next year.”
In addition to a successful clean up, for the third year in a row Ms. Heimes’ 4th graders teamed up with Channel 8 TV to do a musical PSA for the event. Check it out!
