Alaska Youth for Environmental Action Clean-Up

Kyle Holloway and Leticia Pureza

Unalaska’s chapter of Alaska Youth for Environmental Action (AYEA) had their first clean-up of the new school year last Saturday.

Alaska Youth for Environmental Action (AYEA) is a state-wide group that was started in 1998, but just last year had an Unalaska chapter established. It is picking up steam among students here, offering an easy way to get involved positively in the community with their friends.

Students met up in advisor Kyle Holloway’s classroom at the school, where they grabbed trash bags and gloves from their other advisor from the Qawalangin Tribe, Leticia Pureza. They then broke off into groups and walked around the school to pick up trash.

After hitting the school, they rendezvoused at Front Beach and began looking for more trash. By the end of the hour long clean up, the 16 participants collected 8 full bags.

Unalaska’s chapter of AYEA will be doing more environmental activities throughout the year. Stay on the lookout! To help support them, you can contact any AYEA teen, Kyle Holloway, or Leticia Pureza.
