Aleutian Arts Council Host Three Sweet Events

The Aleutian Arts Council has been busy these past few weeks with two successful fundraisers that had Unalaskans tapping their toes and satisfying our sweet cravings.

The Annual Spring Coffee House and Project Dumpway took place at the Burma Road Chapel Saturday, April 30th at the Burma Road Chapel. The evening started with seven submissions to the Project Dumpway Runway show. Outfits spanned from a suit made of paper to a dress made entirely with "Magic the Gathering" playing cards. Hosts Finn Palmer and Kelly Stiles provided commentary on the outfits as the models sashayed on the signature Burma Road runway.

The musical portion of the evening started around 8pm and this year, a newly formed group called, "Todd and the Hotties" with Shawna Rudio on lead vocals took us through a musical journey. The group covered songs by Prince and David Bowie and welcomed an accordion player and a fiddler from Juneau to cover Steve Earle's Irish tune, "Galway Girl."

Other memorable moments from the performance include a old French tune played on piano by Kelly Stiles and a hand-full of original and cover songs from Czech visitor, Mirek Petrik. A group of Eagle's View 4th graders rounded out the show with a some acapela hits including "Uptown Funk" by Bruno Mars.

The following weekend at the United Methodist Church, the AAC  welcomed Ashley Peck on cello and Mary Rowell on from Portland who entertained the masses with a wide variety of baroque period music. The "Just Desserts" event ended, of course, by offering attendants a large assortment of delicious sweet treats, from peach cobbler to gluten-free brownies.

Thanks to the Aleutian Arts Council for bringing so much quality entertainment to the island.
