Athletes of Unalaska Take on a Three-Race Weekend

Last weekend was busy for the athletes of Unalaska!

Starting on a crisp, clear Saturday morning at 10:15am in Kelty Park, the Raiders invited the community out for the Tustumena Invite. It was the final qualifying race before the State Championships on October 1st.

Coach Gibson began the morning by recognizing the accomplishments of the two seniors on the team this year, Taylor Holman and Anthony Lopez.

Sophomore Trevor Wilson finished first for the men with a time of 18:03:01 and Junior Bridget Nalam finished first for the women with a time of 23:06:00. Six men and six women qualified for state with sub 20:00 minute times for the boys and sub 27:00 minute times for the girls. Qualifying boys were Trevor Wilson, Henry Simmonds (18:59:28), Carey Boston(19:13:60), Raul Garcia (19:20:81), Talon Shashnikoff (19:21:81)and Shawn Dolohan (19:24:50). Qualifying girls included Bridget Nalam, Hailey Wilson (23:26:03), Mercedez Caudillo (24:35:06), Taylor Holman (26:20:00), Mia McWilliams (26:48:97) and Julieanne Brikoff.

Later that afternoon the APIA sponsored Health Fair hosted a mud run at Tutiakoff Park. Close to 35 participants made their way through two giant vats of mud, over pallets on end, through tires and across a balance beam. Other obstacles included a team of two, blasting runners with powdered color and group of gentleman tossing water balloons as they ran by.  By the end of the event, most of the participants blue shirts were completely brown with caked mud and it was clear to all that the event was a hit.

On Sunday, September 18th those who hadn’t had their adrenaline fill gathered at the Aquatics Center to participate in the PCR sponsored Triathlon.

The tiny tikes started off the event at 2:00pm, with Cache Henning and Adyson Scott taking first and second place, followed by the youth division in which Kirsten and Jetta Henning took first and second, respectively.

38 participants signed up for the teen and adult heat, with about half of those athletes partnering with two others to share in the fun. The triathlon began with an 800m swim followed by a 20K bike ride first out to the valley and then past Summer Bay. Bikers returned to the Aquatics Center to start the 3K run out to Kelty Field and back.

First place overall and the only woman to complete the race individually was Patti Haase with a time of 1:26:45. Following her was Paulo Nacionales with a time of 1:31:06, Dan Malec with a time of 1:33:09 and Damian Lopez-Plancarte with a time of 1:37:01.

Nice work athletes of Unalaska!
