City Council This Week: Retail Marijuana Ban And Minor Offenses Ordinance

This week the Unalaska City Council is expected to pass a new local ordinance prohibiting retail marijuana shops from opening on the island.

On Tuesday, city staff will present a second reading of the law that narrowly passed a first round on January 26. At that meeting, the vote was three for the ban and three against. When there is a tie vote among the six council members, the mayor casts the deciding vote; the mayor broke the tie by voting in favor of the ban.

If the vote is the same this week, the ban will go into effect immediately.

The Council will also discuss establishing a minor offense ordinance. This law would spell out violations of city law and set fines for each of those violations.

On the consent calendar are re-appointments of residents to city boards and commissions. Davlin Hall and Joanne Villamor are expected to be re-appointed to the Parks, Culture and Recreation advisory committee and Rhonda Anderson and Cyri Thompson to the Library advisory committee.

The meeting starts at 6 p.m.
