The U.S. Coast Guard has rescued another injured mariner, marking the seventh medevac of the winter fishing session.
Officials say the F/V Golden Alaska was fishing 60 miles northeast of Cold Bay on Tuesday, when a fisherman reported suffering from stroke symptoms.
An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew was sent to hoist the 44-year-old man from the vessel, before he was transported to Cold Bay and then Anchorage for emergency medical care.
The Coast Guard also staged a rescue in King Cove on Tuesday, after a 58-year-old man fell off a ladder and injured his spine.
King Cove officials say poor weather wouldn’t allow other aircraft to land, so they requested a Coast Guard helicopter to medevac the man to Cold Bay. He was later sent to Anchorage for further care.
The incident marked King Cove’s sixth medevac of the year and the first involving the Coast Guard.
The community has struck a deal with the Trump administration to build a road with access to Cold Bay’s all-weather airport. Advocates say the road is necessary for King Cove’s health and safety, while opponents say it would harm the Izembek National Wildlife Refuge.
Conservation groups filed a lawsuit last month, arguing that federal officials must get Congressional approval, conduct an environmental review, and open the agreement to formal public scrutiny before any road deal is approved.
