Council Hears Property Owner Assessment Appeals

Chrissy Roes

This week's city council meeting is a two-for-one; first the council will meet as the city's board of equalization to hear annual appeals of property assessments.

City Clerk Cat Hazen said the city received six appeals this year. One has already been settled, and as of Tuesday afternoon, the city's contracted assessor was meeting with the owner of four of the appeal properties. Hazen said she expects tonight's board of equalization meeting to cover at least one appeal.

If a property owner is unhappy with the board's decision, they can appeal further in state superior court.

On the council's agenda are consent items such as certifying the 2016 real and personal property tax rolls. A resolution included in tonight's council packet says the total assessed value of all of Unalaska's real estate is $628 million dollars, with $400 million of that taxable. The city plans to earn $6 million in property tax revenue this year.

Under new business is a first reading of the total city budget for the next year. That budget includes the set amounts allotted for community grants to nonprofits.

The council will vote on a tidelands lease with the Ounalashka Corporation, as well as an agreement for two permanent easements around the new wastewater treatment plant.

The council is slated to end the meeting by going into executive session to talk about a union contract.
