First Annual 6th Grade Poetry Slam

Unalaska’s sixth graders gathered for The First Annual Poetry Slam event in Miss Wood’s classroom on Friday, March 4th at 9:00 A.M.  Over twenty students participated in the event, presenting their original poems to their classmates, teachers, Mr. Good’s fifth grade class and even a few parents.

Miss Wood was joined by Miss Palmer, who also teaches sixth grade English to help host the event.

Miss Rhonda Anderson, the high school ESL teacher, invited 10 guest presenters from various grade levels to read poems for the sixth graders around 9:30 A.M. The guest presenters recited poems by various authors that were often humorous in nature.

Mr. Josh Good and his fifth graders acted as an audience for the event and in turn were given an idea they should expect when they are involved in next years poetry slam and subsequently the junior high and high school Poetry Out Loud competition.

The event lasted a little under an hour, with the guest presenters speaking in between the two rounds of poetry. Students and parents were offered light refreshments after presenting and both teachers and students agreed The First Annual Poetry Slam was a great success.
