Foreign Language Students Win At State

Jeff Dickrell

Unalaska students traveled to the World Language Declamation Competition - a statewide foreign language tournament - last weekend. They were led by Spanish, German and Russian teacher Galena Roraback.

The Unalaska team competed against almost 500 students from schools around the Anchorage area, including Bartlett, West Anchorage, and Service.

The team has eight members, and they brought home seven medals. In Spanish, Onya Enkhbat and Alyssa Tungul got the gold; Marjame Pili and Amber Le won silver medals; and Mia Magalong and John Garduque earned bronze medals. In German, Stephanie Torres won the gold.

"Since we don't belong to any regions, we just went to state, so it was a big honor and the kids showed really great results," Roraback said.

This week, Unalaska students studying Russian will leave for their own separate competition.
