King Cove Sees Second Local Case Of COVID-19 In Seafood Industry Worker

Berett Wilber/KUCB

King Cove officials have reported a second local case of COVID-19, after announcing the city's first June 8.

This is the second case in a seafood worker in the Alaska Peninsula village.

The Peter Pan Seafoods employee was immediately isolated and placed in quarantine in company facilities after receiving a positive test result, according to Paul Mueller, CEO of Eastern Aleutian Tribes, the regional tribal healthcare provider.

The King Cove Medical Clinic is working closely with Alaska Public Health, Peter Pan Seafoods, and the City of King Cove to ensure precautions are taken to protect anyone who may have been in contact with the worker.

How the individual contracted the virus is under investigation.

The employee is not a resident of Alaska, and will therefore be listed separately from the state's total case count. The individual joins 81 other people from out-of-state who have tested positive for the virus in Alaska.

King Cove is home to Peter Pan's largest processing facility. King Crab, bairdi and opilio tanner crab, pollock, cod, salmon, halibut, and black cod harvested in both the Bering Sea and the Gulf of Alaska are processed throughout the year, according to the company's website.

Peter Pan Seafoods did not respond to a request for comment.
