Raiders Compete in Spiketacular Tournament

The Unalaska Raider volleyball team traveled to Lumen Christi on October 18th to compete in the annual Lumen Christi Spiketacular tournament. The tournament consisted of 20 teams in addition of 4 teams from last year and the Lady Raiders were to play their way through the bracket in a span of three days.

The student athletes first played against Hutchison Varsity -- a 3A school and Eagle River JV – which is a 4A school. Though the Raiders dropped both match to both teams, it was clear that they battled through and fought with diligence. Hutchison scores were 25-16 and 25-14. Eagle River scores were 25-12 and 27-25.

On Friday, the Lady Raiders won both sets against Wasilla Lake. Later that day, the Lady Raiders again defeated Cook Inlet Academy (25-19 and 25-23).

Saturday started off great for the Raiders as they played against the host of the tournament: the Lumen Christi Archangels.  The Raiders ended up victoriously by claiming both sets (25-12 and 25-5). They later on fought Dillingham for the second-place spot on the consolation bracket, but unfortunately didn’t win, however, they played with heart and motivation. The Lady Raiders finished as the 3rd team on the consolation bracket, which is quite a success and a great learning opportunity for the developing team. In addition, three of the Raiders had been selected for the All-Tournament Team. These players were sophomores Alleri Tungul and Hailey Wilson, and junior co-captain Kiara Villamor.

This weekend, the Raiders volleyball team will head to Ninilchik for another tournament. Then next weekend, they will play at home in the annual Crabpot Tournament in the High school big gym. Stay tuned for the schedule and come and cheer the Raiders on!
