Readers Go Head to Head at the Battle of the Books

Four teams of third and fourth graders came together to compete in the district competition for the Battle of the Books last Thursday, February 8th at the Eagles View Elementary School gym.

The Battle of the Books is a national program in which students read books and come together in groups to demonstrate their abilities and to test their knowledge of the books they have read.

Michelle Parker helped facilitate the Battle of the Books in Unalaska and has been meeting with students to read and discuss twelve different books once weekly since September. Third grade teacher Sharon O’Malley emceed the competition.

Each team was comprised of four students: a writer, a speaker, a thinker and an alternate. Teams were asked questions created by the National Division of the Battle of the Books and Ms. O’Malley drew the questions randomly from a wicker basket.

After eight rounds of questions, “Team One” emerged victorious with 40 points. “Team Two” scored 36 points, “Team Three” scored 45 points and “Team Four” came in second place overall with 77 points.

The students in Team One were Dalyla Nettleton (writer), Justice Davis (thinker), Isabella Lopez (speaker) and Jardrian Simmons (alternate). Team One will go on to virtually compete at the state level of the Battle of the Books in the near future and all participants were awarded an ice cream party after school that afternoon.
