“On Your Mark, Get Set… READ!”

Karen Kresh

This week, the Unalaska Public Library hosted the Opening Ceremony of its annual summer reading program. The Olympics-themed event was organized by Robi Harris, who kicked off the event by lighting a summer reading torch. More than 60 people were in attendance to celebrate the beginning of the program and to enjoy games and treats at the library.

Librarian Karen Kresh said the program’s theme is not only well-timed with the upcoming Summer Olympics, but is also “a great reminder that it’s important to exercise our minds as well as our bodies, even over the summer months.”

Kids participated in events like the Ping Pong Precision Toss, Cornhole Bean Bag Toss, and Discus Throw, and created their own Olympic-style flags. Kresh said the highlight for most was the large inflatable obstacle course.

So far, 180 people have signed up for the summer reading program, which runs through August 26. The library will offer prizes to participants of all ages this summer.

The next library event will be Library Mini Golf, on July 9.
