The Unalaska Raiders boys' basketball team won the state championship Saturday night in Anchorage, after the team squared off against the Petersburg Vikings, winning 49 to 39 for the Class 2A state championship title.

It was the first time the Unalaska team won the statewide championship since the late '90s. Raiders Coach Kent Russell, who was recently named Coach of the Year by the Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches, credited an excellent defense as crucial.

The Unalaska boys and girls Raiders basketball teams met with success over the weekend at the 2016 SouthWest Conference Regional Tournament. The boys won first place, the girls won third place and both won the academic award.

On Saturday, the boys played Bristol Bay for the regional championship title; they won 56 to 12. Coach Kent Russell says the team started the game over-anxious on offense, but after the first quarter they began to relax, settle into the game and play tough defense.

Afterwards, the team reenacted a time-honored custom.
