Talk of the Town

Unalaskans celebrated the Fourth of July with fireworks, a parade, and a community barbecue.

The first-place award for parade floats went to the Ounalaskha Corporation and Qawalangin Tribe float, which featured a truck-sized model of a bentwood hat and a baidarka.

Unalaskans Against Sexual Assault and Family Violence (USAFV) won second place, and the island’s Girl Scout troop took home third.

Competitors in the annual duck race sent a flock of custom-painted birds down Iliuliuk Creek, where divers ensured none of the decoys reached the ocean.

No sun? No problem.

Unalaskans celebrated midsummer last night in the annual Solstice run. Despite chilly temperatures and overcast skies, twenty runners finished the two-mile course.

Jonathane Pereat finished first in the men’s category, with a time of 13:37, beating second place finisher Guillermo Curiel by more than a minute.

For the women, first place finisher Cheyenne Stewart came in at 18:39, just two seconds before second place finisher Noelle Rucinski.

The Unalaska City High School Native Youth Olympics (NYO) Team capped off an excellent season by being honored by the City Council during Tuesday’s meeting.

The NYO season started back in March with over 30 high schoolers joining the team. Athletes have a choice of ten different events. Although NYO is an individual sport in many ways, passing your skills down to younger or less experienced NYO athletes and helping your teammates is very important.

This weekend, Unalaska will send off the class of 2017 with a commencement ceremony.  From all of us at KUCB, congratulations and best of luck!  Most of you have volunteered for the station at some point and we appreciate it.  We are also sending off staff member Mia Magalong, and board member Tavis Nguyen-McConnell.

KUCB sat down with a few seniors in Ms. Rudio's class to talk about what makes Unalaska unique, and what they'll miss about their home town.

You can also see a snippet of their singing performance here:
