The 9th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration took place on January 16th at the PCR gymnasium. The theme was “Caring Attitudes in Northern Latitudes." PCR coordinator Carlos Tayag was the master of ceremonies and the new PCR director, Roger Blakeley, gave a welcome address.

The Unalaska Raider Basketball teams played in their first games of the season last week. The teams traveled to Anchorage where they competed in the Rally the Regions tournament, which is a gathering of rural basketball teams from around the state. Rally the Regions is a four game tournament with the first three games being a “Round Robin” style and the last game being for the championship or other places.

With the aid of teachers Amy Purevsuren and Shawna Rudio, the UCSD hosted the annual Poetry Out Loud competition on Monday, December 5th in the high school auditorium. There were 43 participants this year.

Established by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, this years competition was emceed by Mia Magalong. Magalong introduced the competition by summarizing the events overall purpose.

With the end of November comes the end of “Movember.” This year, five members of the Unalaska City School staff and supporters

brought back “The Aleutian Staches” team to participate in the worldwide fundraiser for men’s health issues. The men’s goal during the month was to keep their chins and cheeks clean while growing out their mustaches as a mark of solidarity.
