Talk of the Town

The community of Unalaska is a busy place to live.  Our community calendar is full of events and activities.  Talk of the Town is your source for coverage of community events and sports.  KUCB staff writes many of the stories, but we also accept contributions from community members for this section of our website.  Talk of the Town stories are often used on Flash! Unalaska, our weekly television show.  If you'd like to submit a story to Talk of the Town, contact Chrissy.

A Rockin' Good Radio Fundraiser

Oct 29, 2015
Jane Bye / KUCB

We had a rockin' good time at KUCB's annual One Day Radio Pledge Drive on Friday, October 9!  This year's theme was "pirate radio," with our volunteers hijacking the airwaves all day and all night, playing their favorite tunes and taking requests.  Besides the fun at the studio, staff and volunteers were out and about at the Grand Aleutian Hotel, Safeway, and The Norwegian Rat Saloon, taking pledges and photographing members with our very cool life sized pirate (thanks to art teacher Finn and volunteers)!

If unable to call, please radio the U.S. Coast Guard on VHF CH. 16 and they will relay the report.

Raging Waves Welcome Underwater Pumpkin Carving

Oct 27, 2015
Missy Good

The Unalaska Diver's Association held their annual Underwater Pumpkin Carving competition this past Sunday, October 25th. This is the third consecutive year the pumpkin carving has been held by the Non-Profit Dive Association, with several earlier carving events scattered throughout previous years. The weather was ferocious, and the planned dive location of the beach in front of The Norwegian Rat Saloon was under siege by four and five foot breaking waves. While potentially fun, the waves would have led to smashing pumpkins rather than carving pumpkins.

A display of colorful new sculptures adorns the lobby of the Unalaska's community center. At first glance, they might look like ornately decorated milk jugs and Styrofoam packaging, but take a closer look and you’ll find that the kids in PCR 360 program created a whole bug village after studying about insects in the after school program.
