46 Abandon Ship Near Adak

U.S. Coast Guard

The Coast Guard is responding this evening to a fishing vessel down in the Aleutians. Petty Officer Lauren Steinson says the Coast Guard received an electronic alert from the Fishing Vessel Alaska Juris saying it was taking on water.

“They reported that they were taking on water and were about to abandon ship and all 46 people were able to get on survival suits and make it into three life rafts,” Steinson said.

A good Samaritan vessel was on the scene by late afternoon.

“At the moment we have two coast guard air station Kodiak C-130s on their way." Steinson said. "One is on-scene and has established communications with them. Another is enroute. As well as Coast Guard Cutter Midgett is diverted toward the vessel’s position.”

Two helicopters were also enroute. The Alaska Juris is a 220-foot factory trawler that was reported 174 miles from Adak when it went down.
