Fisherman's Body Found In Local Marina

Vic Fisher

Divers recovered the dead body of a fisherman Tuesday evening, less than 12 hours after his captain realized the crewman was missing.

The deceased man has been identified as 35-year-old Matthew J. Warn.

After his employer reported Warn missing midday Tuesday, police starting looking in the Carl E. Moses boat harbor, where the boat Warn was working on is berthed. At 7:30 p.m., commercial divers hired by police found his body under the marina's B dock.

Unalaska police released the man's name after they notified his next of kin. Word of his death spread quickly around the island, and several people reported seeing Warn at a local bar Monday night.

In a statement issued Tuesday night, Deputy Chief Jennifer Shockley said the department understood that the "victim had friends and colleagues in Unalaska and recognized this is a difficult time for them."

"This is the kind of tragedy we see about every two years. Sometimes we find people who are reported missing, sometimes we don't," Shockley said. "Almost all the times that we have a situation like this - where somebody falls into the water in the night - we almost never have anybody who saw anything, which is part of the reason they end up this way."

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed anything at Carl E. Moses boat harbor around 1 a.m. on April 12 to call the department at (907) 581-1233.
