The ballot is set for Unalaska’s October election, with three contested races for City Council and a proposition to raise the island’s sin tax.
James Fitch and Jeffrey Treannie are challenging Councilor Yudelka Leclere as she tries to hold on to City Council seat B, according to City Clerk Cat Hazen.
Seats E and G are two-way competitions: Councilor John Waldron is vying for reelection against Dennis Robinson, while Shari Coleman tries to unseat Councilor Rachelle Hatfield.
Meanwhile, in the school board races, both Cherry Tan and Fernando Barrera are running unopposed for reelection.
The ballot will also let Unalaskans decide if they’re willing to pay double the sales tax when buying alcohol and tobacco.
The City Council has proposed raising the sin tax from three to six percent in an effort to regulate marijuana sales, should the island ever develop a commercial pot industry. The ballot measure needs a simple majority to pass.
Unalaska's general election is October 3.
