Raiders for the Win in Extra-Curriculars!

Unalaska City School students have been participating in a number of extra-curricular competitions off-island in recent weeks. The Raiders headed to Anchorage to compete at events hosted by Skills USA, the Business Professionals of America and the Alaska Science and Engineering Fair.

Against stiff competition, UCS junior Trey Henning brought home first place in Cabinet Making at the Skills USA event.

"Last year there were only five people in the cabinet making category, and this year there were eleven, so there was a bit more competition this year," Henning said.

Henning flew to Anchorage with fellow Skills USA participants Seth Henning (Automotive Service Technology), Bryan Earnshaw (Job Skills Demonstration) and Christopher Tapaoan (Computer-Aided Drawing).

At the Business Professionals of America competition,  Stephanie Torres came in first in Advanced Word Processing Skills and third place in Medical Office Procedures.  Allysa Mina came in second for Medical Office Procedures and Angie Lekanoff came in second for Basic Office Systems and Procedures.

The Science Fair participants included Gianna Villafuerte, Hailey Wilson and Audrey Schomer. Villafuerte came in second for the High School Engineering Category and Shomer came in first for Middle School Chemistry Category. Wilson came in first for the Middle School Engineering Category and also received an award from Alaska Professional Communicators for her Abstract and Presentation.

Congratulations Raiders, and keep up the good work!
