'Spiketacular' Performance by the Lady Raiders

On the 18th of October, the Unalaska Raider volleyball team embarked on their first trip to compete in the Lumen Christi Spiketacular tournament. The Lady Raiders were to play their way through a bracket that consisted of 15 other teams over a span of three days.

On the  first day of competition, the Raiders matched with Tok and won two sets with the scores of 25-19 and 25-6 to end the game. Later that day, they played Cook Inlet Academy and again, won two sets with the scores of 25-13, 25-12, and 25-7. Their lone loss for the tournament had been against Kenny Lake, with the scores of 17-25, 25-22, and 12-15 on a best 2 out of 3 match.

This weekend the Raiders volleyball team will compete in the annual Crabpot Tournament in the large gym.

Friday, the Raiders won three conference matches (best 3 of 5) against CIA, Holy Rosary, and Lumen respectively. The ladies won against CIA and Holy Rosary by taking three consecutive sets. CIA scores were 25-13, 25-12, and 25-7. Holy Rosary scores were 25-12, 25-14, and 25-12.  They fought hard for the win against Lumen Christi, taking the match to the fifth set and ending victoriously. The Unalaska v. Lumen scores were 20-25, 25-21, 25-12, 20-25, and 15-6.

Saturday’s first game against Cordova, last season’s regional champion team, ended in triumphant victory as the lady raiders fought to take the match to the third set after losing their first to Cordova. The scores had been 18-25, 25-22, and 15-13. Winning this game then led them to play in the semi-finals against Su-Valley. This game would take the winning team to the championship game. The matches against Su-Valley all were close. The Raiders won their first match at 25-23, lost the second with 16-25, and lost the third with 10-15.

The game against Su-Valley ended the tournament for the Raiders. They did, however, finish as the 3rd team overall, which was quite a success for the ladies. Along with placing third, three of the Raiders had been selected for the All-Tournament Team. These players were sophomores Kiara Villamor and K Orteza, and senior Kaye Gumera.

This weekend the Raiders volleyball team will compete in the annual Crabpot Tournament in the large gym. Friday, November 11th, games will be at 4:00pm, 5:20pm, and 6:30pm.  On Saturday the 12th, games will be at 10:00am, 11:20am, 12:30pm and 2:00pm.  The game at 2:00pm will determine the winner for the championship bracket.
